Werder striker Aron Jóhannsson will take leave in his homeland. The US international will head to his home in Iceland on Friday to continue his rehabilitation programme.

"We have agreed to let Aron return home to continue his rehab at home in Iceland in the coming weeks. In very close consultation with our medical department, he will complete his rehab programme there and work with a physiotherapist that he has known since his youth,” explained Werder chief executive Thomas Eichin, who added: “As well as the medical and sporting side, you also have to keep in mind the psychological aspect of such a long injury break. We are hoping that some time with his family will have a positive effect to the recovery process.”

Aron Jóhannsson has been out of action since 2015 with a nerve problem in his hip.
