On May 6, 1992, SV Werder won the European Cup Winners Cup - it's been 20 years since the biggest success in the club's history. It happened at Estádio da Luz in Lisbon as the heavy favourites AS Monaco were beaten 2-0 by Werder on goals by Klaus Allofs and Wynton Rufer.

On the road to the final, Bremen got past some difficult opponents such as Ferencvaros Budapest, Galatasaray Istanbul and FC Bruges. AS Monaco and head coach Arsène Wenger were the clear favourites in the final. But the French team did not consider Bremen coach Otto Rehhagel, who experts said came up with a masterful tactical game plan, which began with the nomination of the injured Allofs, who had hardly played in the weeks leading up to the game. "But Klaus knew the French. He had played there a long time. That can help," reasoned Rehhagel. And Allofs rewarded Rehhagel for his decision by scoring the opening goal after a fine individual action to make it 1-0 after 41 minutes, irritating the French.

A factor may have been the fact that they received next to no support from the fans as the stadium in Lisbon was only about one-third full as the Portuguese really didn't care about a match between two teams from other nations. "It was like a ghost town. The most important game in your life - and hardly anybody is watching," recalled Marco Bode, who still remembers how the second goal was scored. "Wynton Rufer got past the keeper on a counter attack and ran so nonchalantly with the ball into the empty net that I thought the defender would catch him." The game was then decided with the 2-0 lead and Uli Borowka kept his promise of having his head shaved with a victory, with Dieter Eilts gladly doing the honors.
