Nils Petersen got his first taste of Weser Stadium four days before the start of training. After successfully completing the medical check-up, the 23-year-old, who is on loan from Bayern Munich for one year from Bayern Munich, was presented to the media Monday afternoon
"I listened to my gut and I was certain pretty early on that my way would lead to Bremen. Werder are a great club which plays offensive football," said Petersen about his decision. "Those in charge really worked hard to get me and we had excellent talks. That's why I'm happy that it finally worked out and that I can be here before the start of the season."
Klaus Allofs and Thomas Schaaf were both also happy to have the 1.88m striker in their attack. "We are happy that the move worked out. When he was the leading scorer of the second Bundesliga he really stood out and showed that he is dangerous in the box and wants to score on every chance," said head coach Schaaf about Petersen. "Nils is a player who wants to score goals. Regardless of where the ball ends up he is there and wants to put it in. You can call that a sense of scoring or as an absolute will to win - and we need that," added Allofs, himself a former top striker.
Petersen will take over the number 24 from the departed Claudio Pizarro. "The fact that Claudio Pizarro wore the number doesn't have any special meaning for me. Everyone knows that he has left his mark in the Bundesliga. But I am not trying to copy him. I will just try to show my own strengths and just be the guy with 24 that puts the ball into the net. That is my big goal," said Petersen.
