In addition to the three Werder Bremen players nominated for Germany’s senior national team - Tim Wiese, Per Mertesacker und Mesut Özil – six other Green-Whites will be travelling with their national teams next week.
Philipp Bargfrede can be happy about his first nomination for Germany’s U21 national team. Bargfrede was Werder Bremen’s shooting star from the season preparations after playing well in nearly every game. He was nominated in December 2008 for Germany’s U20 side but did not play. Now he will accompany his Werder team-mate and U21 European champion Marko Marin to the team, which will be led by new coach Rainer Adrion. Germany will be playing in the Valeriy Lobanovskyi tournament in Kiev, facing off against Turkey in their first game on Tuesday, August 11. Defender Niklas Andersen, who also played well at times with the Bremen seniors, is on the call-up list.
In addition, Portugal coach Carlos Queiroz nominated Hugo Almeida for the Portuguese friendly against Liechtenstein this coming Wednesday. And Sebastian Prödl was called for Austria’s test against Cameroon on Wednesday in Klagenfurt.
Meanwhile, as opposed to his injured team-mate Markus Rosenberg of Sweden, Finland Petri Pasanen will play in the friendly against the Swedes on August 12 in Stockholm.
