The fifth day of training camp on Norderney saw Werder Bremen play their first test match of the season against Rot-Weiss Essen on Tuesday. In front of 3,000 spectators, the teams played to a 2-2 draw at the Sportplatz an der Mühle grounds. Werder went ahead after two minutes through Hugo Almeida and doubled the lead in the 61st minute through Said Husejinovic. Thomas Schaaf's team could not hold the lead after the hard training sessions of the past few days, and Holger Lemke scored twice (61st and 85th) to give Essen the draw.

"We can, but really we must play better," said coach Thomas Schaaf after the game. "That was not what I imagined. We don't want to drive ourselves crazy. But we have to demand more from ourselves - more excitement, more joy in playing, more will in tackles."
