After the international break, SV Werder are raring to go as we move into the business end of the 2023/24 Bundesliga season. Head coach Ole Werner answered journalists’ questions at the press conference ahead of Matchday 27’s home game against VfL Wolfsburg on Saturday, 30th March (15:30 CET).

Ole Werner and his coaching staff’s preparations for the game against VfL Wolfsburg have been complicated by the away side’s appointment of a new head coach in Ralph Hasenhüttl. “We’ve got a less clear idea of what to expect based on their previous games, because they haven’t played any under their new coach yet,” said Werner. “But we’ve faced this situation before. In the past, we’ve had a good track record when it comes to anticipating what we’ll be up against. Because we know in principle how a coach will want his team to play and we also look at the players in their squad.”

The 35-year-old is facing the Austrian for the first time in his coaching career. Hasenhüttl was previously in charge of FC Ingolstadt and RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga, and was most recently boss of then-Premier League side Southampton. “He believes in a high-intensity game, a direct style in possession and a high work rate.” said Werner. “I can give you a rough idea, but I’m also keeping a few of the details in my head.”

The Werder boss’ starting line-up will also be vital. Jens Stage, Mitchell Weiser and Senne Lynen are all suspended, while Justin Njinmah is also unavailable. “It’s an easy choice in a lot of positions,” said Werner. “A lot of the lads have been waiting for their opportunity and want to show what they’ve got. The injuries and suspensions give other players the chance to get on the pitch. I’m looking forward to that and I have the utmost faith in the lads.”
