A dream came true for Marvin Ducksch on Thursday. The 29-year-old has been called up to the Germany national team for the first time and is hoping to make for international debut in one of the games against Turkey (18.11.) and Austria (21.11.). In an interview with WERDER.TV, he spoke about receiving a call from Germany national team coach Julian Nagelsmann, his reaction to this phone call and his excitement about this new experience.

WERDER.DE: Marvin, you’ve been called-up to the Germany national team for the first time. What does that mean to you?

Marvin Ducksch: A lot. It’s made me realise that I’m on the right track. It’s a dream come true for me.

WERDER.DE: A childhood dream?

Marvin Ducksch: Yes, definitely. In football, there’s nothing bigger than playing for your country. Therefore, it’s genuinely a childhood dream that’s come true for me.

WERDER.DE: Talk us through it: The phone rings and an unknown number shows up. Is that how an international call-up goes?

Marvin Ducksch: Yes, that was actually the case for me. Julian Nagelsmann phoned me and I obviously didn’t have his number saved. He then told me that I had been selected for the two international fixtures.

WERDER.DE: Be fully honest with us – did you believe it?

Marvin Ducksch: “I’ve already thought about whether the phone call was real. However, I recognised the voice pretty quickly and realised that it was the national team coach.

WERDER.DE: Your call-up has been a talking point in the media. Regardless, how much did the phone call surprise you?

Marvin Ducksch: On the one hand, I was definitely surprised. On the other hand, I’ve also always said that it’s my goal which I’d like to work hard for. I’m even happier now that I’ve been rewarded for the hard work.

WERDER.DE: Surely it wasn’t easy to keep such big news to yourself. Who did you tell first and how did you react personally?

Marvin Ducksch: I was very excited and nervous – I don’t usually feel that way. However, that was definitely the case on this occasion. My whole body was shaking briefly because it really was a childhood dream for me. Following the telephone call, I took a deep breath in order to take stock of what I’d achieved. I called my best friend straight after that.

WERDER.DE: Niclas Füllkrug has also been selected. Lots of Werder fans are wondering whether you guys have already spoken given that you may play with each other once again.

Marvin Ducksch: I actually tried to get through to him. He didn’t answer the phone at first, but we texted each other briefly in the evening.

WERDER.DE: Germany face games against Turkey and Romano Schmid’s Austria during the upcoming international break.

Marvin Ducksch: Romano and I spoke about it briefly. However, above all, I’m happy to be there and to learn from Germany’s best players. I would like to try to bring my strengths to the team, and you never know, maybe I’ll make my first appearance...

WERDER.DE: We’re looking forward to you getting your first free kick. Many thanks, Duckschi!
