The defeat to VfB Stuttgart was a tough pill to swallow for SV Werder, and the boys were forced to reflect critically on their performance. Nevertheless, the Green-Whites have reviewed last week’s game in the same way they normally do. “We have a critical way of looking back on our matches, both when we lose or win points. We haven’t deviated from this for the game against Stuttgart,” explained head coach Ole Werner in the press conference prior to the home clash with FC Augsburg on Saturday, 19th December (15:30 CET).

Ole Werner is expecting the upcoming opponents to try and take charge of the game by playing with passion and strength in their 1-v-1s. The 35-year-old is well aware that the game could get heated at points. “In games where there are lots of individual battles, there’s bound to be a lot of emotion. We have to keep a cool head in these situations.” Head coach Jess Thorup’s side currently on a six game unbeaten streak and are delivering consistent performances, which all share common factors. “They have a very straightforward approach, where they use lots of power and strength. They’re very good at winning second balls and are organised out of possession,” Werner explained.

Werner stressed the importance of the match against FCA, but also of the Green-Whites’ last two games of the year against Gladbach and Leipzig. “We’re not happy with the number of points we’ve picked up so far. We’ve also dropped points in games that we could’ve gotten more from. There’ve been two or three games where we haven’t played well at all,” said Werder’s head coach. “The table is very tight. Six or seven teams haven’t picked up many points at all. We’re all aware of the importance of every single point.”

Clemens Fritz sees it as a case of being self-aware in order to deal with the current situation. “The onus is on us to get ourselves out of it and finish above enough teams to secure survival,” says Werder’s head of professional football.

SVW’s first step towards achieving this would be to overcome Augsburg. “We’re convinced that we can win this game if we build on our good performances at home recently,” stressed Werner, while Fritz puts particularly emphasis on the support from the stands: “With the force of our stadium and fans behind us, we have to step up to the task and approach the game to make sure that we win.”
