After the 1-0 defeat away against 1. FC Union Berlin in the final game of the 2022/23 Bundesliga season, there was a lot of disappointment for SV Werder. The Green-Whites had intended to bring something back to Bremen at the end of the season. Here is what Ole Werner and the players had to say about the game.
Head coach Ole Werner: “We defended very well in and around the penalty area for a long period. Especially in the first half, we didn’t do enough with the ball. Overall, you could see that we were running out of energy. It was a similar game as in the last few weeks: we were on equal terms again, but couldn’t turn the game to our side in the final period. We can all still be proud of what we have achieved this season.”
Marco Friedl: “We knew that Union would throw everything at us to achieve their dream. We defended a lot of crosses and corners, and it’s tough to take that one went in. We’re disappointed because we knew that we could play with freedom. Our biggest problems today were on the ball.”
Niclas Füllkrug: “We made it difficult for Union for long periods today. They are strong from crosses and have a very good presence in the box. In the end, they deserved to win the game and their performance over the whole season earned them a place in the Champions League. I’m also happy with our season, and we weren’t once in the relegation zone. That’s already a good performance for a relegated team.”
Milos Veljkovic: “We defended with heart and left everything on the pitch. We knew it would be a tough game against a Champions League contender. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough in the end. We wanted to end the season with a good performance and a good result, and unfortunately we couldn't manage the latter. We are still happy for Lücke that he is the Bundesliga top goalscorer.”
