The 33,305 fans inside the MEWA ARENA were treated to a thrilling finale as Werder snatched a point with the last kick of the game. Ole Werner: “Both sides defended well over 85 minutes. There weren’t too many chances. We didn’t manage to keep the ball away from our goal too well in the final stages and that’s what triggered the momentum. We threw everything forwards after going behind and we were rewarded for our fighting spirit. We still, however, have issues that we need to address.”
Clemens Fritz: “It was a crazy ending. We couldn’t find that relief, especially in the second half. Mainz piled on the pressure and they moved the ball really well. The bottom line is, four identical goals were scored today, which was lucky for us. We showed great spirit and the team deserve a big compliment for that.”
Marco Friedl: “It’s very difficult to put into words what went through my head at 2-1. I wasn’t bitter because we conceded two goals once again. However, we came back and the way we did it made it even sweeter. The team showed great spirit. In the end we are happy to be leaving with a point.”
Niclas Füllkrug: “The timing of the goals gives us a better feeling on the way home. The game sums up the team well: a great spirit, but we don't give our top performance on the pitch in terms of quality. We need to get everyone on board to work really hard on that.”
