Jung also spoke about the reasons for his extension, his time up to now at the Green-Whites and his role as an older player in the squad.

WERDER.DE: Moin Tony, you are coming right from your contract signing. The deal is done and you will stay at Werder. As an experience player, are you still excited on a day like this?

Anthony Jung: Not quite as much as at the start, but it is still special. I am very happy that it worked out and that the club has trust in me. On the other hand, I think that I have earned it.

WERDER.DE: There is just weight training left on the agenda today. How will the contract extension be celebrated in the Jung household?

Anthony Jung: My family has played a very big part in this and has had my back the whole time. This is an achievement that lots of people share. You could certainly celebrate that quite well with a glass of wine over dinner.

WERDER.DE: You made it no secret that you feel at home in Bremen. What was a decisive factor for the extension?

Anthony Jung: Of course it’s also a factor how I feel as a player at the club, what my standing is there or what the club’s goals are – a lot comes together in a decision like this. In family life, things off the pitch also count and we feel at home here. The little one is growing up here. The whole package was just right, so it wasn’t a difficult decision for me.

WERDER.DE: You came to Bremen after the relegation from the Bundesliga, how has Werder developed since then?

Anthony Jung: There was a lot going on at the start. The first year was up and down. In the end, however, we managed the promotion. We found our focus relatively quickly and concentrated on the basics. You can feel that there has been a development and that a process is underway. As a player, you want to go along with this process. I feel very comfortable in the team; a lot of things have come together.

WERDER.DE: Clemens Fritz told journalists that you are also capable of playing in the centre. Do you agree with that?

Anthony Jung: Yes, I can play in both positions. During my last season in Denmark, I played as a left centre back. In the end, it doesn’t matter to me which position I play in. Let’s see what happens with time.

Of course you also want to fill a certain role and try to be there for the young players.

WERDER.DE: You probably don’t like to hear it, but at 31, you are now one of the older players in the squad. Do you also feel that way?

Anthony Jung: To be honest, no. It may sound clichéd, but I think age is just a number and that you are as old as you feel. I feel very good and am fortunately fit and healthy. Of course, you also want to fill a certain role and try to be there for the young players, but I’m still a kid in my head in some situations. It’s about having a healthy mix of that and being serious.

WERDER.DE: You’ve beaten us to the next question: does it have nothing to do with your age that you are no longer on Instagram?

Anthony Jung: There was not a lot of thought behind it, I just felt like it. I was never very active myself, but just went along with it as a public figure. I understand that it’s a good path for content creating. Personally, though, it doesn’t give me anything. For me, there are more important things I want to pursue.

WERDER.DE: Let’s get back to football: You have been in the starting eleven in 20 out of the 21 Bundesliga games so far. How happy are you with your season?

Anthony Jung: Very happy. Of course, I know that I can still improve in some areas. It’s my first season as a regular in the Bundesliga, and it’s part of the game that not everything goes perfectly in the top division. I enjoy the moments and think that we have been solid overall as a team.

WERDER.DE: Finally, let’s take a look into the future. You are continuing on your path at Werder. What are your plans for this time with the club?

Anthony Jung: First of all, our common goal of staying in the league as a newly promoted team, but also to keep building the identity that we developed at the start of the season. The last games have not been our best against quality opponents. But our priority should be to find our form again and bring our game onto the pitch, and then I’m sure that we have the quality to cause problems for any opposition.

WERDER.DE: We’re also sure of that. Many thanks for the interview, Tony!
