On Saturday 20th August, Borussia Dortmund are next up for SVW. The reason for being such a special match for lots of players is not just because they have the opportunity to play in biggest stadium in Germany, but also that BVB’s high level has left a positive impression on some of them. “Dortmund are a huge club in Germany and have enjoyed lots of national and international success. They always play on the front foot and embody that certain brand of football. The match at the Signal-Iduna-Park with all the fans is special and something to get excited about,” explained Tony Jung in Werder’s press area on Wednesday.

WERDER.DE has summarised Jung’s answers:

Tony Jung on...

...the draw against Stuttgart: “It feels completely different from the 2-2 draw against Wolfsburg. We won a point against Stuttgart, whereas in Wolfsburg we lost two. We are happy with how the game ended and that Burke was able to score his first goal.”

...the difference between the Bundesliga and second division: “It doesn’t feel any different. Last season in the second division, we had a fantastic atmosphere and lots of energy from the crowd. It is perhaps even a little bit more special. After all, we fought for a whole year to have the right to play in the Bundesliga. Playing our first game in front of a home crowd like that was something special. But in terms of atmosphere, we’ve already been spoilt with it in the second division.”

...the start to the season: “We had phases in both games where we showed our style of football. We tried to stamp our mark on the game and we try to do that every game. We are a team with real quality and do not have to hide. Even if tiny mistakes are punished in the Bundesliga, I’m convinced that we take enough initiative and present ourselves well.”

...the offer from Werder: “I didn’t have to think about it very long. When the talks with Werder began, straight away I was certain that it could be a very exciting thing for me. When I heard that they were interested, I immediately took notice. The size of the club, the history behind it – it was a very easy decision for me in the end.”

...his current situation: “I feel very comfortable at Werder. Not just myself, but my family think it’s great here as well. The environment here at the club – the staff, the fans and everything else that comes with it – is harmonious, and the training facilities are very good as well. You can only feel comfortable here.”

...Borussia Dortmund: “They are a huge club in Germany and have enjoyed lots of national and international success. They always play on the front foot and embody that certain brand of football. The match at the Signal-Iduna-Park with all the fans is something special and something to get excited about. The force with which they get behind their team is impressive. In terms of the game itself, it’s going to come down to every single person on the pitch. That’s why we charge out of the blocks, as you’ve seen with the first two games. We want to build on that. I expect a game against a strong home side. They will show us every part of the quality they have and will, at times, push us back into our own half. We have to try and thwart these phases and play as a team. We also want to enjoy the game a bit, for me at least it’s a highlight of the season.”

...a potential extension: “There have been a couple of conversations already, but not in lots of detail. Both sides are interested and are content with what’s been discussed so far. Let’s see when a decision has been made. So far there is nothing concrete to talk about.”

...the squad’s mentality: “It will be decisive how we act as a team and a staff if we run into trouble. That can definitely happen, but I think we can pull ourselves together and come out the other side stronger.”

...his position: “I feel very comfortable as a full-back. I often played there in the second division and the position suits me reasonably well too. As a full-back, you have to face off against key players, which can lead to interesting duels and I look forward to that. But I also like the position from an offensive point of view. Especially when it comes to being a play maker and winning the ball, you need an effective full-back. And I can do that.”

...the best technical player in the squad: “Romano is great at dribbling and Leo can make some seriously clean passes. Duckschi has an incredible first touch, and can play some phenomenal passes too. I don’t even want to commit to one player. Actually, that whole string of players is extremely sharp at passing and extremely accurate.
