When the Bundesliga and the SVW learned to run. Helmut Schimeczek, Günter Bernard, Max Lorenz, Hans Schulz and Gerhard Zebrowski all belonged to the Bundesliga team of SV Werder Bremen, which brought the first German football championship to the Weser in 1965. Although coming from different backgrounds, they were united by their childhood in the bombing nights of the Second World War and their hopes of survival in kicking and bolting on the streets. They were the prototypes of the football worker of the German post-war years: ambitious and industrious, but at the same time willing to take risks and full of wit. Players like them shaped a new phase in Bremen's and German football, because the contract player of the 1950s and 1960s not only increasingly played competitive sports to earn a living, but also experienced the media attention of their personas for the first time.
At the centre of this book is Berlin-born Helmut Schimeczek, who worked for VW in Wolfsburg/West Germany after a solid vocational education and also played football in the Amateuroberliga. He attracted attention in Northern Germany and was "discovered" by SV Werder Bremen in 1958. His colleagues Günter Bernard, Max Lorenz, Hans Schulz and Gerhard Zebrowski are also portrayed. For the first time, and certainly for the last time, the era of the legendary Werder managing director Hansi Wolff as well as the periods of the prominent coaching personalities "Schorsch" Knöpfle, "Fischken" Multhaup, Günter Brocker, Fritz Langner, Fritz Rebell and Hans Tilkowski from 1958 to 1970 are told and illustrated from the player's perspective. An exciting look behind the scenes of the club and into player life with unforgettable victories and defeats, unique encounters and personalities. A must for every Werder fan!
