Werder fell to their second defeat in their second Bundesliga game of the season, losing 3-2 to TSG Hoffenheim. Niclas Füllkrug scored on his first start since returning to the club to put Werder in front at half time (42’). Hoffenheim then hit back twice in quick succession through Ermin Bicakcic (54’) and Ihlas Bebou (59’). Jojo Eggestein received his marching orders after a second yellow card (77’), but this didn’t stop Werder. Yuya Osako won the ball back and rifled home the equaliser in the 81st minute. However, Pavel Kaderabek headed home from a corner to win the game for Hoffenheim (87’). Ömer Toprak also had to go off injured in the game.

Line-up and formation: Niclas Füllkrug came in for the injured Milot Rashica (adductor), making his first start for Werder since 2012. The 4-1-4-1 formation was identical to the formation against Düsseldorf last week. When Toprak was forced off injured, Theo Gebre Selassie took his place at centre-back with Maximilian Eggestein moving to right-back. Kevin Möhwald came on to play in central midfield.

Starting XI: Pavlenka, Friedl, Moisander, Toprak, Gebre Selassie, Sahin, J. Eggestein, Klaassen, M. Eggestein, Osako, Füllkrug

Substitutes: Kapino, C. Groß, Möhwald, Straudi, Harnik, Pizarro, Sargent

Action-packed second half

54 mins: Goal for Hoffenheim. 1-1. Ermin Bicakcic heads home from a corner to level things up.

56 mins: Maxi Eggestein replies almost immediately, but Hoffenheim keeper Oliver Baumann keeps out his shot.

59 mins: Goal for Hoffenheim. 2-1. It’s a quickfire double from the hosts. A header from Sebastian Rudy leaves Bebou free in front of goal and he fires beyond Pavlenka to put the home side in front.

77 mins: Jojo Eggestein is sent off. After being booked around ten minutes earlier for a challenge, Jojo Eggestein gets his second yellow card. The striker pulled a Hoffenheim player back as they were on the counter.

81 mins: GGOOAALLL! Yuya Osako! 2-2! Kevin Vogt plays a pass against the foot of Davy Klaassen and Yuya Osako is released. He has a great first touch to open up the space and he rifles home beyond the goalkeeper!

87 mins: Hoffenheim score. 3-2. It’s another set-piece goal for the hosts, with Kaderabek heading home this time.

90 mins: Full time. Werder lose their second game of the season 3-2 in Hoffenheim.

Match summary: Werder will feel this is a game in which they played well yet again. It was the two goals just after half time that turned the game on its head and Werder will feel that they could have been more effective when attacking. The Green-Whites showed great morale to equalise when down to ten men and it’s extremely harsh to lose the game in the closing moments like they did. Werder’s next game is at home to FC Augsburg next Sunday 1st September (15:30 CEST).
