After their last two away matches, some Werder players will be making even longer trips to link up with their respective national sides in the coming weeks. While last minute goalscorer Milot Rashica must travel around 1500 kilometres to represent Kosovo, Jiri Pavlenka must only get to the Czech Republic, where his side will face England. In addition to these two, there are a further five Werder players who are on their way to represent their national teams.

Rashica can make history

Werder goalkeeper Jiri Pavlenka has already made ten appearances for the Czech Republic national side and could stand to make a further two next week. The goalkeeper’s side face European Championship Qualifying Group A leaders England. With a win, the Czechs could catch up with the Three Lions, but Gareth Southgate’s side would still have a game in hand.

Werder’s own last-minute hero Milot Rashica could also see action in that group next week. Together with Kosovo, the 23-year-old could make history and qualify for an international tournament for the first time in his and his country’s history. The chances are not even that remote – with eight points from five games, the Kosovans sit just one point behind Pavlenka’s Czechs. Following a friendly against Gibraltar next Monday, the Kosovo side will seek to make history in a showdown against Montenegro.

Last summer, Germany’s U21 side lost against Spain in the final of the 2019 European Championship 2-1. Werder’s home-grown talent Johannes Eggestein was not on the pitch at the time. Now he has a chance to avenge the previous Germany U21 side in a friendly against the Iberians next Thursday. Just a few days later, Stefan Kuntz’ side meet the Bosnia and Herzegovina U21 side.

Friedl called up to the Austrian national team for the first time

Werder’s left back Marco Friedl was actually supposed to be playing for the Austrian U21 team on Friday; however this is no longer the case. Due to a number of injuries for head coach Franco Foda, the defender was promoted to the first team for the upcoming international fixtures. Friedl now has the chance to make his debut for his country in the next few days as Austria take on Israel and Slovenia.

New signing Michael Lang can also look forward to joining up with the Swiss national team for the first time in over a year as they continue their bid for qualification to the European Championships next summer against Denmark and top of the table Ireland.

Joshua Sargent has also been called-up for international duty by his country. Werder’s striker will join up with the US national team to face Cuba and Canada in the CONCACAF Nations League.

Youngster Benjamin Goller made his Bundesliga debut on match day four this season. He will now be hoping to appear for the German U20 team as they line up against Poland and Switzerland. Goller could potentially make his first appearance in national team colours since May 2019 due to a torn hamstring.
