The seventh day of the pre-season training camp, which included two tough sessions, could not have started off any better. Stefanos Kapino signed a long-term contract extension at SV Werder. “I am just really happy that my future lies with Werder – that was always my wish,” the goalkeeper said happily at his contract signing on Wednesday morning. After this great news, we sat down with the 25-year-old Greek giant to talk about his future with the Green-Whites.

WERDER.DE: Congratulations on the contract extension, Stefanos. It’s not the first commitment that you’ve made this summer is it?

Stefanos Kapino: "(laughs) Yes, I hope that the first commitment is a lifelong one. I am really happy to be married. It was a divine and lovely summer break for me. Now I can look forward to the years to come. My wife and I feel at home in Bremen.”

WERDER.DE: You must be delighted too about extending your stay with Werder?

Kapino: “Of course I am over the moon! Werder was the best thing that could have happened to me after a rough few seasons. Therefore I am really grateful and just happy to be staying long-term in Bremen. It was always in my mind that I wanted to sign a new, long-term contract here.”

WERDER.DE: What are your goals for your time with Werder?

Kapino: “For the time being I just want to impress in training, give it my all and repay the trust that was shown to me by Werder offering me a new contract. Obviously right now Pavlas is our regular ‘keeper but of course I would like to be the Werder number one at some point, I have said that from the start.”

WERDER:DE You goalkeepers work like a true team…

Kapino: “We are a really good team. That’s not easy to find. I think we work really well together. “Kiki” Vander is a really important factor for that. He doesn’t just improve us individually but he keeps us together too, making sure there is both fun and a balance.”

WERDER.DE: But there is that feeling, not just among the goalkeepers, that the whole team fit together really well. Is that true?

Kapino: “I have become really good mates with most of my teammates. It is amazing to have those guys around you – it makes it feel like we are one big family. I am closest with the more experienced players like Hanno, Davy, Niklas and Ludde. We try to involve the younger players as much as possible. It is good fun.”

WERDER.DE: Thank you, Stefanos!
