Niclas Füllkrug never would have believed that by this point in the international break, he would have a goal, an assist and 202 Bundesliga minutes for Werder Bremen. After all, he had been out for almost half a year prior to that due to damaged cartilage. “I’m really pleased. Werder have done a really good job with me,” said the 26-year-old. Now, Füllkrug is bursting with confidence and above all, strength.

When the new recruit from Hannover 96 signed with Werder Bremen, he was right in the thick of his rehabilitation program. A few months later, the striker is at a level of fitness where he can almost complete the full 90 minutes. And his knee? “It feels as stable as possibly ever before, because we’ve built so much muscle,” says the striker. He has spent many hours in the fitness suites in Zillertal, Grassau and at the wohninvest WESERSTADION, in order to work on building muscle strength.

But Füllkrug was by no means alone in on this journey. “I’ve received a lot of therapeutic treatment and I’ve always had a coach by my side, who led me through the procedures,” emphasises the big forward, adding: “So many different issues can be dealt with here because the club is so well set up.” Which is one reason is why Füllkrug believes he is at a level that he is happy with.

But the 26-year-old also finds strength in his new family. Four weeks ago, the Werder player became a father for the first time. He dedicated his first goal for Werder on matchday 2 in Sinsheim to his daughter. It is “the little one,” he says, “who inspires me and gives me positive energy on a daily basis.” Füllkrug is putting this energy to use in training and on the pitch, whether by dropping deeper or pressing high to win the ball from centre-backs.
