After no more than two weeks’ rest, Marco Friedl is back in full swing at Werder. The European Championship exit shrugged off, the new season in focus!
The first competitive game of 2019/20 is almost exactly a month away. Werder kick their season off with a cup game against Atlas Delmenhorst. 21-year-old Marco Friedl is determined to be a regular in the team by then: "I would like to play, regardless of the other two players’ injuries. My aim is to become an important part of this Werder side and play regularly," said Friedl on Tuesday in Zillertal. He wants to take the next step in his career.
The Austrian U21 international received plenty praise from his national team head coach Werner Gregoritsch after their EURO U21 adventure: "He also told me I’ve become a lot more robust," Friedl reported. The versatile defender played at right back for Austria at the tournament, but could expect to be back in central defence in green and white.
Friedl’s short-term target is therefore, first and foremost, to get fit. Tuesday afternoon is his last planned individual session, before he is expected to join the team again on Wednesday. "The next few days will definitely be tough, but that’s part of it. Luckily I didn’t lose out too much in my two-week holiday."
