SV Werder Bremen have added another talent to their squad ahead of the start of the Bundesliga season: Werder have signed centre-back Ömer Toprak on a season-long loan from Borussia Dortmund. It is highly likely that there will be an obligation for Werder to buy the Turkey international following his loan.
Toprak arrives with 227 Bundesliga appearances under his belt with Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen and SC Freiburg. In addition, he has featured for Dortmund and Leverkusen in the Champions League and the Europa League.
“Ömer is a centre-back with pace, who has played at the highest level for several years. We are very glad that he has chosen Werder. He played very well in the recent Supercup tie against Bayern and can be an asset to us,” said a delighted Florian Kohfeldt.
Chief Executive Frank Baumann also expressed his joy at the new signing. “We can be really enthusiastic about a player of his quality, somebody who has proven his class at both domestic and international level and has a lot of experience he can bring to the team.”
Ömer Toprak is similarly extremely excited about his new challenge. “I am glad to be here. I had some good conversations with Frank Baumann and Florian Kohfeldt. I was convinced by the development and philosophy at Werder and I would like to play my part in contributing to bringing them forward positively.”
