October is set to be a busy month for Werder, with the Green-Whites playing against three Bundesliga opponents, all of whom had high hopes of league success at the start of the season. Friday’s match against VfL Wolfsburg precedes the international break, after which Werder travel to last season’s runners-up Schalke 04 on Saturday the 20th, before welcoming Europa League competitors Bayer 04 Leverkusen to the Weserstadion on Sunday the 28th.
“I’d rank our next three opponents up there among the best teams in the league,” says Werder’s Sporting Director, Frank Baumann, who is looking forward to the month’s schedule. “We are welcoming these challenges and want to show that we can keep up with the big teams.” At the end of an action-packed October, Werder face SC Weiche Flensburg 08 in Lübeck on the 31st October in the second round of the DFB-Pokal.
It will be an important month for the Green-Whites, whom Baumann deems perfectly prepared for the upcoming games, despite their first defeat of the season against Stuttgart last Saturday: “The team have embodied the right mentality and we’re on the right track.”
