Werder have dropped to sixth place in the Bundesliga table after losing 2-1 in Mainz. The home side were focussed from the start of the game and had the better of the chances. Mateta put Mainz in front (25’) after a missed clearance from Niklas Moisander. They then made it 2-0 in the second half through Gbamin (51’). Florian Kohfeldt responded by bringing on both Johannes Eggestein and Claudio Pizarro, and the latter halved the deficit (78’). However, the goal wasn’t enough for Werder, who fell to a third defeat of the season.

Lineup and formation: The Green-Whites made four changes from their win in the DFB-Pokal mid-week. Philipp Bargfrede and Niklas Moisander returned to the starting XI following their recent injuries, with Max Kruse and Yuya Osako joining them. Nuri Sahin, Sebastian Langkamp, Claudio Pizarro and Johannes Eggestein dropped out. The team lined up in a 4-3-3 formation.

10 mins: First chance of the game falls for Mainz. Aaron and Latza combine with a good one-two, and Mateta hits the ball after the ball is crossed in. There’s some luck for Werder, as Aaron was offside in the build-up, so any goal wouldn’t have stood.

16 mins: Another chance for Mainz. Aaron puts a cross in and Kunde gets to the ball, but his shot is straight at Pavlenka.

25 mins: 1-0 to Mainz – Mateta. Brosinski plays a ball forward and Moisander misses his clearance, leaving Mateta to run through and finish against Pavlenka.

44 mins: Rare chance for Werder. Eggestein picks up the ball on the right wing and crosses for Osako, but he can’t get his header on target.

45 mins: Half time in the Opel Arena. The home side are in the lead at the break and have looked the more dangerous of the two sides. Werder started to play a little better towards half time, but did not find an equaliser.

51 mins: Goal for Mainz – 2-0. Augustinsson can’t control a pass from Pavlenka and gifts possession back to Mainz. Brosinski gets the ball to Gbamin, who is allowed to run across the edge of the box and fire a shot low into the bottom corner, through the legs of Bargfrede.

60 mins: Werder need to change something here and Florian Kohfeldt looks to the bench. Johannes Eggestein and Claudio Pizarro come on for Florian Kainz and Yuya Osako.

78 mins: GOAL for Werder! Claudio Pizarro! Jojo Eggestein combines well with Gebre Selassie down the right wing and picks out Claudio Pizarro in the middle, who makes no mistake! Perfect from the Peruvian and the deficit here is halved!

81 mins: Chance for an equaliser! Moisander hits the ball long and Harnik gets it under control, before passing to Kruse. The captain hits a fierce shot, but Zentner is there to deny him!

90+4 mins: Full time. Mainz were the better team here tonight and Werder didn’t do enough to win the game.
