Given the high temperatures over the past few days, it’s no wonder that Marco Friedl was asked whether the team would be getting any time off because of the weather. “No,” he replied, laughing. “It’s pre-season so that won’t happen. Of course it’d be better if it was cooler, but we’ll power through.”
It’s the second pre-season camp of the summer for the 20-year-old Austrian, who also trained with the team in Zillertal. “We train hard, but that helps us to improve. The mood in the camp at the moment is really positive,” Friedl explained to interested fans on Facebook.
Of course, Friedl also spoke of the buoyant atmosphere that has taken over the fans at the moment. This atmosphere inspires him. “I’ve never experienced this before. The fans are everywhere and support us no matter what, like they did during the second-half of last season. It’s magnificent support and it’s so encouraging to see as players,” admitted Friedl.
This atmosphere will keep the defender going throughout the season, so that the team can achieve the goals they’ve set themselves. “We have to stay consistent and, above all, make sure we’re strong at home at the Weserstadion. If we manage that, anything is possible.” On whether he’d rather play at centre-back or left-back, he doesn’t know. “I don’t really mind. I train and feel comfortable in both positions, but I’ll play wherever the manager needs me to.” Marco Friedl is fired up for the new season, and that has nothing to do with the current heat wave.
