Werder will go into the new season with another assistant manager. Ilia Gruev will start work alongside Tim Borowski, Thomas Horsch and head coach Florian Kohfeldt.
“One of the first realisations from this season was for us to make ourselves even more professional with our coaching team in the future. We want to develop the players even further individually and work even more intensively on set pieces with the team. Ilia is the perfect addition to the team. He was a professional footballer himself for many years and also brings a lot of experience as a head coach with him,” said Florian Kohfeldt.
Until last October, Ilia Gruev was boss at 2. Bundesliga side MSV Duisburg, for whom he also played 80 times in the same league between 2000 and 2004. Before that, he was assistant coach at Hajduk Split, 1. FC Kaiserslautern, and MSV Duisburg. “I'm very excited for this new chapter alongside Florian Kohfeldt. He's an outstanding head coach who I've really admired for a long time. I'm sure that we can achieve a lot together with Werder. I’ve liked the club for a long time because of the way they go about things, and I’m sure that I’ll fit right in here,” said the 49-year-old.
