They’ve made it! Maximilian and Johannes Eggestein have been named in the final Germany U21 squad for the European Championship in Italy and San Marino. DFB announced the squad on Friday morning. Stefan Kuntz and his team are currently at the training camp in South Tyrol, preparing for the tournament.
"Obviously I’m very happy about the call-up. I found out last night at a meeting," Johannes Eggestein told WERDER.DE. "The training camp has gone really well for me so far. It reminds me of the camp in Zillertal with Werder, so I am happy here," said the younger Eggestein brother, who has big intentions for the EUROS: "We’ve analysed our group stage opponents in detail. We definitely want to progress to the knockouts – anything is possible from the semi-finals."
Maximilian Eggestein is also confident of Germany reaching their targets at the U21 EURO: "Preparations are going well. We’ve got our first friendly today, which we will use to try and consolidate the things we’ve been training. We obviously want to qualify for the Olympics and compete for the title," said the midfielder. The Werder midfielder is particularly excited for the game against Marco Friedl and Austria’s U21s. "Marco and I talk pretty every day and obviously we talk about the game a lot," said Maxi.
Aside from facing Werder teammate Marco Friedl, who was selected for the Austria youth team on Thursday, Germany will come up against Denmark and Serbia in their group.
