He had his medical, he had his performance test, the contract was signed and then there was the press conference – Serge Gnabry is now an official Werder player after a tiring and intense day. Late on Tuesday evening Werder’s last summer signing flew out to Kassel where he began preparations with the Germany U21s for both the upcoming international fixtures against Slovakia and Finland. He then travelled to Bremen to secure his move to the club. “I am really happy to be here. I had many positive conversations with people at the club which is why I have decided to sign for Werder,” announced Gnabry at his official unveiling in the afternoon.
The Green-Whites can look forward to an attacking and versatile player, who already has plenty of confidence in his new side. “Of course I analysed the team closely before making the move. I see huge potential in this squad, above all in attack and I am confident that we will get plenty of points this season,” said Gnabry. Two former Werder players also had good words to say about the club. “I spoke a lot with Mesut Özil and Per Mertesacker. They only have good things to say about Bremen. But it was still solely my decision to come here,” said Gnabry.
Werder Chief Executive Frank Baumann echoed Gnabry’s delight at signing for Bremen, but also expressed his satisfaction with the club’s dealings in the transfer market. “In Robert Bauer and Serge Gnabry we have brought in a lot of talent. The balance of players in the team is good, what we now have to do is show this on the pitch,” said Baumann. He also reiterated that contrary to media coverage, Werder Bremen and Arsenal were strong partners when it comes to transfers. “We bought Serge. There are no stipulations with other clubs. Our funds are strong enough for us to control our transfers ourselves.
