The second match of the season is upon us! On Saturday at 20:30 CEST, it will be the 53rd time that the Green-Whites have met Fortuna Düsseldorf in a competitive match. However, this is the first time that the duel will take place in the 2. Bundesliga. For head coach Markus Anfang, the approach to the game is clear. "The last game always gives you something to focus on for the next one. We saw that we didn't create enough opportunities going forward and weren't consistent enough in defence last weekend, that was clear. Against Düsseldorf, we have to force more opportunities so that we become more of a threat in front of goal," said the 47-year-old at the pre-match press conference.

The squad: Nicolai Rapp (muscle), Ludwig Augustinsson (late start to training and vaccination side effects), Milos Veljkovic (quarantine), Jiri Pavlenka (back) and Leonardo Bittencourt (ruptured inner ligament) are not available to head coach Markus Anfang for the match in Düsseldorf. In addition, Anthony Jung will likely not be in the Green-Whites' line-up either. The central defender will soon become a father and has left the match preparations to be at the birth. Eren Dinkci, Abdenego Nankishi, Stefanos Kapino and Kevin Möhwald, who have returned to team training, are still doubts.

Taking the 2. Bundesliga head on

The head coach on the game: During the week, Markus Anfang emphasised in a press conference that the time factor is playing a key role at the moment. "We have to focus on the basics and work on getting those right. Naturally we want to win every game, but you also have to give the boys time to develop in order to be able to build stability. We have to take the 2. Bundesliga head on," explained Anfang at the pre-match press conference. Nevertheless, the strategy against an opponent who make "a lot of runs from deep" and are “good at positional changes” is clear: "We have to force more opportunities so that we become more of a threat in front of goal. It's up to the players to get into these positions. We have to do that better against Düsseldorf.”

The last meeting: The two sides last faced each other in the 2019/20 Bundesliga season on matchday 18. Werder came away from the away clash 1-0 winners against Düsseldorf, who were direct rivals to the Green-Whites in the table. The decisive goal came towards the end of a mixed game as Niklas Moisander met a free kick with his head at the far post in the 67th minute, with the goal going down as an own goal as the ball bounced off the shoulder of Düsseldorf goalkeeper Kastenmeier and over the line. In the final minutes of the match, SVW's former captain Moisander was shown a second yellow, however Werder were able to pick up the three points despite the dismissal.

Home strength vs. scoring streak

Fortuna strong at home: Last season Fortuna Düsseldorf lost only two home games in the 2. Bundesliga, fewer than any other team. Rouwen Hennings is a reliable goal scorer and was top scorer for Düsseldorf last season with nine goals. He picked up where he left off in the first game of the season as Fortuna beat Sandhausen 2-0, with Hennings scoring his first brace of the calendar year.

Werder’s scoring streak: SV Werder Bremen have scored in their last twelve clashes with Fortuna Düsseldorf since a 0-0 draw in September 1991. It is Werder's longest current scoring streak against a second-tier team. Werder coach Markus Anfang remains winless in his first four second-division games against Düsseldorf as a coach so far, but hopes to turn this around on Saturday: "I can still remember losing twice against Düsseldorf with Darmstadt, despite playing really well. So I’m hoping that we can play well and reward ourselves with some points on Saturday," finished the head coach.
