Johannes Eggestein and Werder Bremen are going separate ways. The 23-year-old attacker has joined Belgium first division side Royal Antwerp FC with immediate effect after the two clubs came to an agreement on Thursday.

“We’ve found a solution that works for all parties. It would have been hard for Johannes to get the playing time he wants here. Therefore, the transfer makes sense, one year before the end of his contract. We wish Jojo all the best for his future,” said sporting director Frank Baumann.

The transfer to Belgium sees the end of an important chapter in Eggestein's career. "I'm thankful for my many years here at Werder Bremen. The club and the city have a special place in my heart and I'll always have a special connection with Bremen, not only because I spent part of my youth here and grew up in this city. Nonetheless, drawing a line under my time at Werder and starting a new chapter is the most sensible thing in a sporting sense."

Johannes Eggestein joined the Werder youth academy in 2013 from TSV Havelse, before making the step-up to the first team. Since making his professional debut in the DFB-Pokal in 2016, the attacker has made 56 appearances for the club, scoring 6 goals.
