Werder scored two in 76 seconds on their way to a 3-0 home victory against Heidenheim on Friday evening. After an uneventful first-half against our opponents, who began the night in third place, the Green-Whites got off to an extraordinary start to the second half through goals from Friedl (50’) and Ducksch (52’). Heidenheim then thought they were back in it through Kleindienst (55’), but the goal was ruled out for a tight offside. Thomalla then scored an own goal (64’) to put Werder three up, which proved to be the final goal of the game. The team put in a brilliant, clinical performance, the atmosphere was outstanding and most importantly, the three points are ours. What a superb evening!

Line-up and team news: Werder head coach Markus Anfang made two changes to the side that were defeated in Dresden, as Lars Lukas Mai and Manuel Mbom were given a start in place of Anthony Jung and Niklas Schmidt. Felix Agu returned to the squad after his injury, but Niclas Füllkrug missed out with a calf issue. Anfang went for a 4-5-1 system with Marvin Ducksch up top and Mitchell Weiser playing in right midfield.

Starting XI: Zetterer - Weiser, Mai, Veljkovic, Friedl; Gruev, Rapp, Mbom, Dinkci, Schmid; Ducksch

Bench: Pavlenka – Jung, Assalé, Schönfelder, Nankishi, Schmidt, Park, Agu and Straudi.

An open game!

First-half highlights:

22‘: Marvin Ducksch fires a corner into the box. Whilst Veljkovic just misses the ball, the cross could have ended up going in on its own but for a Heidenheim clearance. What a delivery!

23’: Leipertz goes past everyone on his own and is in a good position for a shot on the right-hand side of the penalty area, which he takes under some pressure from the Werder defence, but Zetterer stays strong to save the effort!

25’: Tim Kleindienst shoots from 20 yards out, and his attempt from the centre of the field just sails past the goal!

39’: And breathe! We were almost 1-0 down there as Kleindienst gets down to head the ball towards goal from about 18 yards out, and his effort smacks the left post. We got lucky there!

41’: Ducksch puts a corner in towards the back post, and Veljkovic climbs high to head it at a tight angle, but Müller is down quickly to save. A good chance, though!

45+1’: Half-time! An open game and it must be said that Heidenheim have had the better chances!

Two goals in 76 seconds!

Second-half highlights:

50‘: Let’s go, 1-0! Ducksch’s free-kick from the right of the pitch meets Friedl’s perfectly-timed run who then volleys it in off the post!

52’: Pandemonium in Bremen! Just 76 seconds later Werder have doubled their lead! That’s the sort of Werder mayhem we like to watch! Rapp intercepts Müller’s pass and picks out Ducksch straightaway, who has no problem stroking the ball home from 18 yards! Wow!

54’: Kleindienst puts it in for 2-1, or so we thought! The goalscorer was actually in an offside position before heading the ball in the Werder net, as confirmed by the video assistant, and the goal is chalked off.

64’: Thomalla turns it into his own net for 3-0, and it’s a crazy own goal, but we’ll take it! Ducksch crosses it in from the right, and it seems to have failed to pick anyone out, but it takes a touch off Thomalla’s boot and rolls into the Heidenheim goal for Werder’s third!

90+1’: Full-time! Werder win at home against Heidenheim by a score of 3-0 after a tremendous second-half performance!

Summary: That was certainly enjoyable! After a tight first half in which Heidenheim had the better opportunities, Werder came out for the second half with real intensity and stuck three goals past their opponents! Whilst Werder did get fortunate tonight through Müller’s poor pass and an own goal, it was nevertheless a strong performance overall, a deserved victory and a brilliant response to last week’s match against Dresden!
