After Werder’s bitter defeat in Darmstadt, head coach Markus Anfang wanted to put their performance under the microscope. After a convincing home win against Heidenheim, the team should have had more confidence, but the Green-Whites lacked consistency last weekend. Markus Anfang noted that in his press conference on Friday. “We are lacking continuity. We played very well in front of 30,000 fans against Heidenheim and that gave us confidence. Then we went to Darmstadt and lost because we didn’t play with enough courage, although that is something that we have in abundance. As coach I have to examine the reasons for that.”

In the second tier especially, it’s essential to focus on one game at a time. “In the Bundesliga 2 anyone can beat anyone.” To be successful you have to concentrate on implementing the game plan, said Anfang. “In Darmstadt we didn’t think about going forward. It’s my job to address that. I have to show the team that they can put into practice what they’re capable of and encourage them to think and play aggressively.”

The consequences of their defensive mindset became visible when they went 2-0 down, with Darmstadt’s Pfeiffer scoring after a misplaced pass. “We wanted to play backwards and we were punished for that. Nicolai Rapp made an error, and I’m not criticising Nicolai as an individual, but rather the mindset we had in that situation that meant we played backwards,” explained Anfang. “Had we been thinking of going forward, that would not have happened.” In the coach’s view, however, the team is by no means lacking in quality. “We are able to create chances and have shots on goal. We have the quality to go forward and even though the last few years have been difficult, we have to do that,” said Anfang. He made it clear that he wants to see the attacking football that Werder are known for in the away fixture against Sandhausen.
