Markus Anfang will not have a full squad to choose from ahead of SV Werder Bremen’s season opener against Hannover 96 (20:30 CEST). The head coach will be without six players for Saturday’s match, with two further players a doubt.

Leonardo Bittencourt (partial rupture to the medial collateral ligament), Nicolai Rapp (muscle issues), Milos Veljkovic (quarantine), Abdenego Nankishi (muscle issues), Jiri Pavlenka (back problems) and Eren Dinkci (suspended) will all miss the match. “It’s too early for Ludwig Augustinsson,” Anfang said during the pre-match press conference. The Swede has only just returned to Bremen this week and has only taken part in individual training. “Ludde underwent all the performance tests and is currently training individually, so that we can ease him back into team training,” said Clemens Fritz.

Whether Nick Woltemade and Stefanos Kapino will feature this weekend remains to be seen. “Nick is carrying a slight knock and Kapi has muscle issues,” said Anfang. Marco Friedl will be the only player in the squad to not have played the full 90 minutes of a match during pre-season. “Marco only joined up with the team late because of the EUROs and you can see that he’s lacking some freshness. He’s doing well in training and with the drills. It’s too soon for him to play the full 90 minutes, but he’s definitely able to feature,” said the head coach.
