Not much went right for him at the start of the season, but Niclas Füllkrug is currently in the form of his life. The 28-year-old has scored seven goals and registered five assists in his last nine matches. He admitted to having strike partner Marvin Ducksch to thank for a large portion of his goal contributions when questioned on it in the Mixed Zone on Wednesday.

Niclas Füllkrug on...

His vast-improved form in recent weeks:

“I’ve really started playing better but that’s part and parcel of the game, things like that can happen. I’ve been on a few poor run of form in my career, but that was the second time that things have got really bad for me. I hadn’t hit rock bottom or anything, but it was certainly a difficult time. You find that you can bounce back quite quickly, though, and even quicker when you don’t talk or think about it too much. It was like I’d just found that missing piece of the jigsaw. Since then, I’ve put in some great performances and registered a lot of goal contributions. I was too impatient at the beginning, but I really feel I’ve found my feet over the course of the season.”

His strike partnership with Marvin Ducksch:

“It’s simply the case that we understand each other very well on a footballing level. We aren’t selfish either - we’re always looking for ways to provide for each other, which is an important quality as a striker. If you always take the shot every time, it just won’t work. Each of us has traits and does some things more often than the other, but we’re not ashamed of that. I also get on well with him on a personal level. Marvin’s genuinely a really cool guy, and it’s easier for  a player like me to have a strike partner. We’ve scored at least three goals in every game under Ole Werner and when you look at the goals more closely, you see that a few of them wouldn’t have happened if we weren’t playing with two up top.”

Comparisons with other legendary Werder strike partnerships:

“Of course, I’m aware of these partnerships, particularly from my time at Werder in my youth - the likes of Klasnic and Klose or Pizarro and Rosenborg, who I’ve even had the chance to get to know personally. They were incredible strikers who had brilliant careers. We’re just glad that our partnership is going so well and we don’t want to rest on our laurels. If we get promoted, that would be amazing and we’re doing all we can to try and be as successful as we can. We want to win every game and we can increase our chances of winning if we all do our bit in every game we play.”

On his COVID infection:

“There are two types of quarantine. The first is that you’re ill and you hope to get well soon and get healthy. The other, which I experienced, is that you feel nothing and can continue to do everything at home. I tried to keep myself fit by doing a few different workouts as I spent nine days at home as a positive case. I struggled to keep up a bit in the first few training sessions, but then I got back into it and after I had a good result following an ECG, I felt confident that I was fit enough to play.”
