After returning from an international break where he helped his Serbia reach the World Cup with an injury, Milos Veljkovic finally returned to the Werder starting XI for a 4-0 home win against Erzgebirge Aue. “It was a fantastic evening,” said Veljkovic, who got himself on the scoresheet in audacious style to net the Green-Whites’ second goal of the evening. In an interview on Monday afternoon, Veljkovic spoke about his spectacular “scorpion kick”, new head coach Ole Werner and more.

Milos Veljkovic on...

... his fantastic goal against Aue: “I got just as many messages from scoring that goal as I did when I qualified for the World Cup with Serbia – a crazy amount of people have got in contact with me. You can’t forget Romano’s great goal either; I kind of feel like I’ve stolen the show! All in all it was just crazy and I’m very thankful. It was a great night.”

... the energy in the team after the win: “Yes, a win like this can give you a spark. Happy memories are always good – of course, you learn from defeats, but we don’t want those. Our aim is always to win. It was the ideal start under the new head coach.”

... the togetherness in the team: “The team has put the turbulent last few weeks behind them superbly. We’ve had a lot more discussions recently and have really improved our communication. We’re sticking closer together than ever before and that’s carried itself over to the pitch. I can only praise the rest of the lads – it’s not been an easy time at all.”

... new head coach Ole Werner: “He’s very calm and professional. We haven’t had too much time to talk to one another, but he was very easy-going in our previous talks. We got gien our tasks before the game and knew what we had to do. His half-time team talk on Friday was also crystal clear: he said, ‘We need to shut up shop’. It’s good for both myself and the young players to get a bit of calmness from the coach.”

... his future at Werder: “I’m solely concentrating on Werder. I’m thankful for the club giving me a chance and giving me my breakthrough here – I would definitely love to get back up to the top flight with Werder.”
