For the first time in over a year, Werder were able to welcome back fans to the wohninvest WESERSTADION, just in time for the team’s opening 2. Bundesliga match and head coach Markus Anfang’s first home game. SV Werder and Hannover 96 played out an exciting 1-1 draw, with several chances for both teams. “It was an evenly-matched game. Hannover could have won it towards the end,” said Anfang. “Overall, you can see that the team are coming off a tough season. That was also the case during pre-season and things continuously improved. I’m assuming that the same thing will happen during the competitive season. It’s a process and we cannot forget that we are dealing with people, and not machines.”

WERDER.de have summed up all the post-match reaction:

On the game:

Ömer Toprak: "It was a tough game. We started well, had several chances and then Hannover took over and hit the crossbar. After the break, we opened the scoring from a set piece and then conceded off a counter-attack five minutes later. That cannot happen. We should have, and needed to, gain security from our lead. Instead, Hannover got that extra motivation from their goal and could have won the game.”

Michael Zetterer: "It was a back and forth game, and we have mixed feelings afterwards as a result. We failed to see several things through. The goal we conceded could have been avoided and we can do better in attack, and will need to work on that.”

Niklas Schmidt: “We started well and created some good chances, and then scored early into the second half. We shouldn’t have let our lead slip so easily from a counter-attack. Then came a phase during which we were very lucky, which we have to admit. We weren’t able to secure the ball and need to thank Zetti for preventing a defeat. We’ll take the draw.”

Markus Anfang: “We started well into the second half and then conceded off a counter-attack. It was unnecessary and frustrating to concede like that at home when we were 1-0 up. We lost control at the back and lost our composure, and overall the 1-1 draw is deserved. We had several phases in which we worked well, but we weren’t able to transition from the space into the final third, despite the opportunities that presented themselves. We were lacking that touch in the final third that you need in order to create chances to score.”

On the return of the fans:

Ömer Toprak: “We really wanted to give the fans a win. We came out for the warm up and the fans were really cheering us on. That was great. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to give them three points as a thank you. If you think about the fact that we were relegated last season, then their support is even more incredible. My compliments to the fans.”

Niklas Schmidt: "It’s fun to feel that excitement again when you make a tackle or play a good pass and then hear the cheers from the stands. I had goosebumps coming onto the pitch.”

On the approach:

Niklas Schmidt: “When we stuck to our game plan, that’s when we were able to combine well and build up from the back. Those were good moments. It’s the first game and the season is just getting started. We can build on this performance.”

Ömer Toprak: “We had four weeks of pre-season. Certain things have become engrained, but others are still missing. We have one point now and need to keep learning.”

Markus Anfang: “The league is very tough. Everyone can beat anyone. We need to be up to the challenge, and it’s a process that we’ve taken the first step towards tonight. The goal is build ourselves back up and we will continue this process week by week in order to bring some stability into our game.”
