SV Werder Bremen have acquired a further player for the coming season: The Green-Whites will welcome 21-year-old Lars Lukas Mai from German champions FC Bayern München on a loan deal. The U21 European champion spent last season on loan at Darmstadt 98 in the second division, making 32 competitive appearances.

"Lars is a well-trained, ambitious and physically strong centre-back with professional experience in the second and third division. We have been following his progress for a long time, but particularly since our U17 championship final against Bayern – we see him as a centre-back with a lot of potential who has proven that he can play at a high level," said Frank Baumann, Werder Bremen’s sporting director.

Lars Lukas Mai is optimistic about his spell at the Weser: "My talks with the club representatives convinced me that the move to Werder was the right one for me, and that I would have the optimal conditions to further my personal development here. I will give everything to help us achieve as much as we can on the pitch and am looking forward to the challenge."

The now 21-year-old, who will get to know his new teammates at the Zillertal training camp, is originally from the Dynamo Dresden academy, but moved to FC Bayern München in 2014. He worked his way through the FC Bayern youth teams, gained promotion from the regional leagues to the 3. Liga with the U23s and went on to win the league. In 2017/18 he made two full 90 minute appearances for the record champions.
