On Sunday, the game against Dresden will pit two brothers against each other. Werder defender Lars Lukas Mai will play against his brother Sebastian Mai, the Dresden captain. The 21-year-old spoke to the media on Thursday, and his excitement ahead of the weekend was clear: “This is definitely a highlight for me and my family. The emotions are building up inside me. I can hardly wait for Sunday!”

In their previous clashes, so far the Werder player has got the better of his brother – two wins in two games. As we all know, good things come in threes: “We have played against each other twice so far and I have won twice. It bothers him, of course. I want to continue the series, and will give my all no matter whom we are playing against. Whether that is my favourite team or my brother.”

Mai: “Everyone is excited to see us play on Sunday.”

The Mai brothers were both born and raised in Dresden, before the younger, Lars Lukas, moved to the Bayern youth team. After six years, Mai moved to Darmstadt on loan, before coming to Werder this summer. However, this does not affect the bond he has with his hometown and his family: “My dad was wondering who he should support. He eventually decided that the better team should win, even though he is a Dresden fan. But mainly everyone is just excited to see us play on Sunday.”
