It was announced on Friday that Werder Bremen would kick off their 2022/23 Bundesliga season with an away game. Ole Werner’s team will travel to VfL Wolfsburg on matchday 1. “We’re pleased to be back,” said Werner.

WERDER.DE has summarised the team's reaction to the fixture announcement:

Ole Werner: "When you look at the fixture list, there are great matchups week in week out. That’s what we’ve been working hard towards for a year. We’re pleased to be back involved. We’re hoping for a lot of support with us on the road in the first game of the season in Wolfsburg. We’re really looking forward to the season opener."

Marco Friedl: "The first game against Wolfsburg is a game that will mean a lot. A lot has happened there during the summer. They’re a very good team who will go into the new season with a lot of ambition. It will be interesting to see how the game goes. We’re fired up for it and are pleased that things are getting going again"

Christian Groß: "A North Derby against Wolfsburg to start the season will be an exciting and good game. Above all, I’m pleased that our fans won’t have far to travel and there will certainly be a good amount supporting us."

Clemens Fritz: "We’re pleased, along with our fans, to have retuned to the Bundesliga and are looking forward to the opening game against Wolfsburg. The first four games against Wolfsburg, Stuttgart, Dortmund and Frankfurt are a challenging start to the season."
