Thomas Schaaf will take charge of the team following the decision to part ways with Kohfeldt. The 60-year-old, who coached Werder for 14 years and won the double with the Green-Whites in 2004 among other achievements, will travel to the quarantine training camp in Barsinghausen on Sunday and coach the team for the final phase of the season. He will assisted in this role by the current coaching staff as well as Wolfgang Rolff, who will act as assistant coach. It has been agreed with Thomas Schaaf that his involvement as head coach will be limited to the final match of the Bundesliga season and any possible relegation playoff matches.
“We’re glad that Thomas has agreed to take on the task of coaching the club in such precarious circumstances. We hope that he will be able to use his experience and prepare the players in the best possible way for the last game of the season. It will be a matter of giving them absolute conviction and total commitment for the game itself and possibly also for the relegation playoff in order to achieve our goal of staying in the Bundesliga,” said Baumann.
Thomas Schaaf is aware of how difficult the task ahead is but remains optimistic about the final game of the season against Borussia Mönchengladbach. “It’s a huge challenge of course, but we still have every chance of staying in the league. We don’t have much time, but we will do everything we can in that time to make sure we go into the match with passion, confidence, and self-belief in our own strengths so that we can be successful in the end.”
