Three goals scored and a clean sheet saw Werder advance to the final 16 of the DFB-Pokal, as the Green-Whites finished 2020 off with a convincing win against second-tier Hannover 96. The match also saw a number of firsts as Manuel Mbom scored his first goal for SVW, Eren Dinkci made his debut in the cup, and Ilia Gruev made his first appearance in professional football. "We had a young team on the pitch that performed very maturely," head coach Florian Kohfeldt summed up after watching his side reach the last 16 of the DFB-Pokal. "I would call tonight a successful end to the year."

On the game:

Florian Kohfeldt: “The DFB-Pokal is an important competition for us. We have always emphasised that to the players and I think you can see that in the way we have performed so far this season. We really wanted to get to the last 16 and that was obvious to everyone watching tonight. We played well in every area of the pitch. they put us under pressure at the start of the second half, but I thought we dealt with that very well. We had a young team on the pitch that performed very maturely this evening.”

Maxi Eggestein: “I think that the crucial thing for us was that we had a good plan and we executed it well. We knew how Hannover would set up and how they would start the game. Our game plan worked perfectly in the first half and we could have had more goals before the interval. After half time, we came under more pressure and we could have maybe defended better. But overall I would say that the win is fully deserved.”

Theodor Gebre Selassie: “It was key that we managed to get the goals we needed and also prevent them from having any big chances at the other end. That shows that we put in a good performance. I'm very happy with the clean sheet although maybe I should have scored a second! There were a couple of opportunities where I failed to control the ball, but for my goal I was just focused and got the connection that I wanted. Overall though, the important thing is that we're through to the next round.”

On Niklas Moisander:

Florian Kohfeldt: “At the start of the season, I let him know that he would be spending more time on the bench this campaign. He took it well and I have a lot of respect for the way that he has adapted to the situation. He hasn't had to sit on the bench for much of his career, just the last few weeks. But he has adapted and shown himself to be a true captain and a strong character in the changing room. I'm very happy to have a character like him in the team.”

Maxi Eggestein (on his assist): “It didn't surprise me to be honest! He often does that, it was classic Niklas.”

On two consecutive victories before Christmas:

Theodor Gebre Selassie: "Before the game against Mainz, it was our aim to win both of the games before Christmas. We are all delighted to have achieved that. Now we can go into the short break with a winning feeling and hopefully get off to a good start in the New Year.”
