SV Werder Bremen will play in the Bundesliga 2 next season following the 4-2 loss against Borussia Mönchengladbach. After his last match for the Green-Whites, Niklas Moisander struggled to hold back the tears: “It’s hard to put it all into words. It’s a sad day for the whole city, for the fans, and for the club.” Head coach Thomas Schaaf was also clearly disappointed following the match: “We did our best to turn things around again, but we couldn’t do it. That’s very frustrating for us all and for me especially.”

On the game:

Niklas Moisander: “We fell behind very quickly today and we never recovered afterwards. The whole team is responsible for the result. After the game against Bielefeld we were in a good position but we managed not to win a game after that. After a run like that, it’s difficult to argue that we deserved to stay in the league.”

Thomas Schaaf: “When you look at the game as a whole, it’s difficult. We didn’t carry out our gameplan as we had hoped. It doesn’t help when you fall behind so early. Then we had a better period, but we simply had to equalise. That’s what we needed to do, but we lacked the conviction. After we went two goals down, it’s even tougher. It was too little too late for us.”

Frank Baumann: “The performance was disappointing over long periods. We needed to get into the game a bit more. We have to find an equaliser, but then we conceded a second straight after the start of the second half. We just didn’t rise to the task.”

On relegation:

Niklas Moisander: “It’s hard to put it all into words. It’s a sad day for the whole city, for the fans, and for the club. They’ve supported us fantastically over the last few years. All I can say is that it really hurts. This club belongs in the Bundesliga, but in the end we just didn’t give enough. We’d like to apologise to the fans and to the whole city.”

Thomas Schaaf: “ It’s very difficult for me. There is absolute silence in the dressing room. We don’t need to speak about the future right now. We tried to turn things around but we couldn’t do it. We know that the club is very closely linked with the city. Now that we’ve been relegated, it hurts the fans a lot. We’re all bitterly disappointed.”

Frank Baumann: “It’s a massive sense of disappointment for everyone employed by the club and for all fans. It’ll take a while to fully sink in. I won’t put the blame anywhere else. I bear the overall responsibility. I have to emphasise that Thomas Schaaf did everything in his power. This situation is very difficult to deal with and to put into words.”
