Despite being knocked out of the DFB-Pokal on Friday night following defeat after extra time against RB Leipzig, the Green-Whites can take a lot of encouragement from the performance. The same attitude and mentality shown in the semi-final last week will be required for the remaining games of the Bundesliga season: "We showed the right intensity and aggression and played with conviction as a team. That’s exactly what we need for the last few games," said Clemens Fritz.

Our director of football and scouting spoke to the press about the DFB-Pokal exit and what the team can learn from it for the next league game against Leverkusen. Fritz also looked ahead to the imminent quarantine training camp, which Werder will be entering next week. WERDER.DE have the most important quotes.

… injuries: "Milot Rashica and Ömer Toprak are working individually today – we’ll have to wait and see when they re-join the team sessions before making a decision on Saturday. Manuel Mbom’s involvement is still uncertain, but aside from that everyone’s fit."

… plans for the quarantine training camp: "Personal contacts are to be reduced to a minimum. Next week on Wednesday (12 May) we will travel to the hotel and on Friday we will travel to Augsburg. After that it is not clear yet how we will handle things. We need to see what our options are. Whether we stay down south or travel back north is yet to be decided. We need to find the solution that best allows us to prepare for our opponents. By Friday, we will be back in Bremen ahead of the Gladbach game and will stay in the Parkhotel, that’s been decided."

… lessons learned against Leipzig: "We’ve made a few changes at training and have talked at great length. To us, it’s clear that the important virtues haven’t been apparent in every game. We showed real togetherness as a team against Leipzig, worked hard defensively all over the pitch. In the end it was an even game, and we have to take the positives from that. We have proven that we can keep up with strong opponents if we give it our all. We need to take this and turn it into confidence, even though we were obviously gutted to lose the semi-final the way we did."

… the next game against Leverkusen: "Fact of the matter is, we are not in the relegation zone, but we by no means want to rely on this fact. We need to come to terms with this relegation battle and concentrate on us. Leverkusen are a quality team that try to attack. They hit teams very hard on the break after winning back possession. So we need to make sure we get behind the ball quickly after losing possession. Every one of our players, whether they were on the pitch or on the bench against Leipzig, is predestined to give everything they’ve got for us. Every individual is responsible and we need to come together as a team now."
