"At first I didn’t think I’d reach it," said Maxi Eggestein after scoring the opening goal against TSG Hoffenheim, unable to hide his smile. Werder’s midfield all-rounder was visibly relieved as he pushed the ball home with his weaker left foot in the fifth minute of Sunday evening’s game; understandably so, as well, since this was Eggestein’s first goal at the WESERSTADION for one and a half years. His recent performances and his goal could be a sign of things to come regarding the 23-year-old’s new role in the Green-Whites’ midfield.

SVW have looked a completely different team in the last four Bundesliga games compared to last season, bringing a certain degree of aggression to the pitch. Maxi Eggestein has made the same observations: "We all want to get back to a place where we can dominate games a little more, link up better and attack with more purpose."

Get the results, start dominating games

Nevertheless, Maxi is far more concerned with results than style of play at the moment, which will be the first steps of progressing to more consistency. "When you have more confidence, you can play with more courage," he said.

Head coach Florian Kohfeldt has given Maxi Eggestein more responsibility with a view to the 2020/21 campaign, but has reiterated on multiple occasions that he does not wish to rest everything on his shoulders. However, despite his relative youth, or perhaps because of it, one thing is certain: Eggestein epitomises Werder’s rebuilding process. "We have shown that we’ve been working on our style of football," he said, praising Sunday’s performance, and added: "You can see this season that no matter who is playing for us, everyone is blending in." The name of the game for this young Werder team is: rediscovering the Green-White way of playing attractive attacking football and pursuing this consistently. "We have a really young squad now, and a whole new hierarchy, this all needs a bit of time to become the norm," said Maximilian Eggestein. The home grown talent’s potential to become a real leader at SVW is indisputable.
