SV Werder Bremen got the new season off to a winning start with a 2-0 victory over Bundesliga 2 newcomers Eintracht Braunschweig on Sunday. The first preseason friendly was broadcast live and free of charge on werder.tv and YouTube as two first half goals from Ludwig Augustinsson and Davy Klaassen in the 15th and 21st minutes proved the decisive factor in the game.

Line-up and formation: Head coach Florian Kohfeldt fielded 22 players in total as both teams replaced all 11 players at the interval. The first half saw Werder line up in a 4-4-2 formation with a midfield diamond, however Kohfeldt switched this to a three-man attack in the second half as Davie Selke, Nick Woltemade and Johannes Eggestein were brought on up front.

First half line-up: Pavlenka, Augustinsson, Osako, Füllkrug, Agu, Sargent, Schmid, Erras, Klaassen, Friedl and Rieckmann.
Second half line-up: Dos Santos Haesler, Straudi, Groß, Toprak, Gebre Selassie, M. Eggestein, Bittencourt, Mbom, Woltemade, J. Eggestein and Selke.

Augustinsson powers home while Klaassen goes for finesse.

Key moments in the game:
15th minute – Ludwig Augustinsson scores the first goal of the 2020/21 season! After a short corner, the Swede fires into the roof of the Braunschweig net from an angle on the left side of the 6-yard-box.
21st minute – Davy Klaassen doubles Werder’s lead! After another attack led by Romano Schmid, Klaassen collects the ball and deftly chips the Braunschweig keeper.

Conclusions: A successful opening game with Kohfeldt’s team dominating both halves and putting in a good defensive display. The only thing missing was a second half goal to round off a convincing Werder performance. Next week will be spent training in the heat, before Werder take on Linz ASK during training camp in Zillertal on 19th August at 17:00 CEST.
