An impressive SV Werder Bremen performance saw the Green-Whites defeat Bruno Labbadia’s Hertha BSC 4-1 on Saturday evening in the first game of the Rückrunde. Head Coach Florian Kohfeldt watched a strong start from his side that only improved as the game went on, and Werder came away deserved winners. Davie Selke opened the scoring after Romano Schmid was brought down in the box after just 10 minutes played, before Ömer Toprak doubled the advantage with a header in the 29th minute. The Berliners struck back shortly before the break through Jhon Córdoba. Following half time, two stunning strikes from Leo Bittencourt (57’) and Joshua Sargent (78’) sealed the deal and ensured the three points came back to Bremen!

Line up and formation: Head coach Florian Kohfeldt made two changes to the starting XI compared to Tuesday’s narrow loss in Mönchengladbach. Kohfeldt opted for on-loan striker Davie Selke as in the first game of the season, who replaced Josh Sargent. Leo Bittencourt was also rotated into the leu-up in place of Kevin Möhwald, who did not travel to the capital and was replaced in the squad by Julian Rieckmann. Eduardo dos Santos Haesler was also brought onto the bench in place of Stefanos Kapino, who has been loaned out for the rest of the season.

Starting XI: Pavlenka, Agu, Friedl, Toprak, Veljkovic, Gebre Selassie, Eggestein, Mbom, Schmid, Bittencourt, Selke.

Substitutes: Dos Santos Haesler, Rashica, Osako, Moisander, Sargent, Chong, Gruev, Rieckmann, Dinkci.

Selke and Toprak put SVW two up

First half highlights:

10th minute: Goal for Werder! Romano Schmid is brought down by a sliding challenge from Mittelstädt in the box, and the referee points to the spot. Davie Selke steps up and coolly slots it into the top-right corner against his parent club! Advantage Werder!

22nd minute: Penalty save! Jean-Manuel Mbom tracks Matheus Cunha back but brings down the Brazilian in the Werder penalty area, leaving the referee no choice. Cunha stutters his penalty run-up and fires to Pavlenka’s left, but SVW’s keeper is equal to it and brilliantly parries to safety!

23rd minute: Another fantastic stop from Pavenka! Jhon Córdoba jumps to meet a cross from the left and sends a close-range header flying towards Werder’s net, but Pavlenka pulls off a great save to keep the hosts out again.

29th minute: Goal for Werder! Leonardo Bittencourt whips in a well-taken corner, and it’s Ömer Toprak who rises highest to power a bullet header into the top-right corner of Schwolow’s net. A perfect opening half hour for Kohfeldt’s team!

45+2 minute: Goal for Hertha. The hosts pull a goal back right on the stroke of half time through Jhon Córdoba. The Colombian latches onto a great cross from Peter Pekarík and nods the ball beyond Pavlenka with a good finish. A big second half awaits!

Stunning goals from Bittencourt and Sargent

Second half highlights:

48th minute: Matheus Cunha advances with the ball and finds space to shoot from distance. He hits it low and hard but Pavlenka keeps a close eye on the ball and dives to make a comfortable save.

56th minute: Pavlenka is again on hand to keep out Hertha, this time parrying to safety from a Córdoba header.

57th minute: Goal for Werder! Maxi Eggestein pings a perfectly weighted ball forwards from deep, and Leonardo Bittencourt touches it down, turns, and pulls out a sublime finish past Schwolow. Two-goal cushion restored!

67th minute: End-to-end football as Milot Rashica picks up the ball and races past a Hertha defender towards goal, but sees his effort parried by Schwolow. The ball is then immediately taken up the other end by Matheus Cunha who curls a shot from the left towards the far post, but it’s wide.

69th minute: Romano Schmid whips in a low cross and Milot Rashica throws himself at the ball, but the Kosovan cannot make contact and it runs through the box.

78th minute: Josh Sargent receives the ball outside the Hertha box and turns smartly, before lining up a long-range effort. The young American hits the ball low and hard and it flies into the bottom corner. What a goal!

90th minute: Milot Rashica advances again and fires an effort on goal, but it misses the target.

Conclusion: The Green-Whites take home three massive points! In a game full of opportunities, Florian Kohfeldt’s team put in a great performance and soundly defeated Hertha. After Davie Selke and Ömer Toprak had put Werder two goals up, the hosts pulled one back as Jhon Córdoba headed home on the stroke of half time. Following the interval, Leo Bittencourt and Josh Sargent added two more to the tally with spectacular strikes, ensuring that SVW took all three points!
