There was one hugely important minute in the game in Jena. That was the minute between Josh Sargent’s great chance to make it 1-0, and then his actual goal to put Werder into the lead. “I was a bit frustrated at first, but I kept going and was ready for the next chance. Luckily, I took advantage when it came along,” said Josh Sargent on the morning after the 2-0 victory against FC Carl Zeiss Jena in the DFB-Pokal (match report).

Shortly before the striker scored the first goal of the game for SV Werder Bremen, he missed a chance to do exactly that in the 48th minute. After a fine through ball from Leonardo Bittencourt, Sargent ran through clear on Jena keeper Lukas Sedlak’s goal. The 20-year-old could have taken a shot on, but he chose to square it to Davie Selke instead and the ball was intercepted by an opponent – the promising position was wasted.  The good thing for Werder was that the American didn’t let his head drop; when full-back Ludwig Augustinsson sent a cross into the penalty area in the 49th minute, Josh Sargent leapt and headed Werder into the lead. The attacker’s goal cleared Werder’s path to the second round of the DFB-Pokal. Sargent doesn’t mind who the Green-Whites will face on the 22nd/23rd December, but he’s hoping for a home game. “Under floodlights. And hopefully with fans.”
