Josh Sargent is focused - on the here and now, but above all on what lies in the future. “We're going into the new season focused and more positive,” says the striker, ten days before the new season kicks off. Werder’s experiences last season have left no doubt in the mind of the American: “No one wants to go through that again,” he says as he looks back over the relegation battle and the subsequent play-off with Heidenheim.

A good start to the new season is key and the Green-Whites’ good team spirit will help with this. The many young players that have joined the club this summer are making a big contribution to the atmosphere in the dressing room. Only 20 years old, Sargent himself is a member of the young guard, but has already been at Werder for two years. In the summer of 2018, the US international made the switch from his hometown of St. Louis in Missouri to Bremen. He was introduced to the first team via the U23s, and has made 44 appearances for Werder to date, in which he has six goals and six assists.

Head coach Florian Kohfeldt has been particularly pleased by Sargent’s progress, remarking recently: “Josh is no longer just challenging to get into the team. His in-game strengths, his physique, his work out of possession and his positional flexibility speak volumes of his ability.” Naturally Sargent is appreciative of the coaches’ praise, however he has no intention of resting on his laurels. On the contrary: “I have to focus on myself and work hard. My mentality can be a big advantage. I want to be one of the guys who work the hardest on the pitch.”
