Niklas Moisander will remain captain of SV Werder Bremen for the upcoming season, as head coach Florian Kohfeldt confirmed his choice in advance of the first competitive fixture of the 2020/21 season.

Moisander will wear the armband for his second consecutive season for Werder, having previously captained Ajax Amsterdam and the Finland national team. “It’s a great honour for me to continue on as captain,” he said. “The team respects me, which is the most important thing for me. What matters to me is to lead by example. I will act professionally and help my teammates in every game and every training session.” Davy Klaassen will remain Werder’s vice-captain for the upcoming season.

"Confirming his standing in the team once again"

Head coach Florian Kohfeldt highlighted his good relationship with the 34-year-old centreback as one of the reasons behind his decision. “He has a calm and laid-back style, yet is driven and ambitious. He has been somebody that I have been able to trust over the last two years, and an important spokesperson for the team,” said Kohfeldt. “He is also well-respected by the squad, something which has been clear once again in pre-season. I think he is the most suitable choice to be our captain.”

Niklas Moisander joined Werder from Genoa in summer 2016. The Finn won three Eredivisie titles with Ajax while also playing over 40 European matches for the club. He previously captained the Finland national team, for whom he earned 62 international caps, before also taking the SVW armband in August 2019.
