“A year is a long time,” said a clearly relieved Kevin Möhwald following Werder’s friendly against SC Austria Lustenau. The 27-year-old made his comeback exactly 365 days after he last took to the pitch for the Green-Whites in a Bundesliga match against TSG Hoffenheim. Soon after, the defensive midfielder had to undergo knee surgery, which marked the beginning of “a long, long wait” for Möhwald.

The wait finally ended on Wednesday afternoon, when Möhwald was subbed on for Patrick Erras at the Parkstadion in Zell am Ziller. Möhwald even professed to being a bit surprised, as his comeback came sooner than expected. “My progression took a good turn. It wasn’t part of the plan that I would play here today,” he said. “It came about based on our training sessions.” The midfielder has made 29 competitive appearances for Werder since making the move to the Weser in summer 2018 from Nürnberg.

If it were left up to Möhwald to decide, then he won’t have to wait all too long for his next competitive appearance. “I’m happy to have played again and I’m in the right shape to be able to help the team out soon in our upcoming matches,” he said. Head coach Florian Kohfeldt is equally as optimistic, saying “If things go well, then Kevin could be an option for our matchday squad for our opening Bundesliga game and play 20 to 30 minutes. By October, he should be ready to be an option to start, if all goes well."
