Davy Klaassen is evidently disappointed at his side’s losing start to the new Bundesliga season against Hertha BSC (4-1, match report). The 27-year-old has turned his attention to the future, however, as Werder face their next challenge away at FC Schalke 04 on Saturday. “We need to learn quickly,” says Werder’s vice-captain.

So has the setback undone the good work of pre-season, when the side built up confidence through seven wins and plenty of goals? “No,” says Davy Klaassen. “It’s disappointing, but we knew that the Bundesliga would be completely different to facing a second-, third- or fourth-division side in pre-season.”

Werder’s bright spot from Saturday was surely the return of 8,500 fans to the wohninvest WESERSTADION. “It was unbelievable. It felt like there were 40,000 people there,” says Klaassen, clearly pleased to be reunited with a section of the fanbase. “Everyone is happy that we can play in front of fans again and that we get to see what they think of the game. I had goosebumps when we came out for the warm-up.”
