There was huge frustration after the 1-0 defeat on Sunday, and the dropped points continued to sting as the new week dawned. “The disappointment is still there today. We could see that there was a lot more in the game yesterday,” said Christian Groß. Now though, attention turns to Wednesday’s DFB-Pokal quarter-final against SSV Jahn Regensburg. The good showing against Stuttgart needs to be replicated in midweek. “We came close yesterday and showed that we can play at a high intensity, and that we want to pick up points at all cost.”

It was an even game in which Werder put in a spirited performance but weren’t precise enough at the key moments of the match. “Our mistakes were punished immediately and that’s why we left the pitch as losers,” said the 32-year-old Groß. Ludwig Augustinsson headed an unlucky own goal ten minutes from time to decide the match, but the team now has to look forward with optimism, according to Groß: “I’m happy that we are playing again with this cup game. It’s definitely one of the highlights of our season.”

The Green-Whites have the chance to reach the semi-finals of the Pokal on Wednesday evening, a feat last achieved two years ago with a win over Schalke 04. Werder will be facing Regensburg, who currently occupy 14th place in the second division. “It’s definitely an extra incentive for Regensburg to be playing as the underdog against a team in a higher division. But there’s no reason for us to underestimate our opponents. We have to prepare well for the game and play the game as it comes,” said the Bremen-born midfielder.

Our number 36 is also up for the fight in the Bundesliga as the fixture list nears an end: “The weeks to come will be intense and demanding but it’s definitely possible for us to pick up some more points. We’ve already shown this season that we can beat the Bundesliga’s top teams.” The Werder players have to keep their concentration for what remains of the season.

Easter Monday, however, is a time to be spent with family. “Maybe I will hide some eggs in the garden,” said Groß. After that, all focus will turn towards preparing for the cup tie.
