After picking up a point at FC Bayern Munich (match report), Clemens Fritz, director of football and scouting, spoke to the media on Tuesday about Werder’s impressive performance. He also, like usual, discussed the week’s talking points as well as Friday’s away game at VfL Wolfsburg. Fritz is sure about one thing: “We have no reason to sit back and relax.”

Clemens Fritz on...

…team news: “We need to wait a little longer with Niclas Füllkrug and see how he is in the next few days. We obviously hope to see him return to squad training soon, but we also don’t want to take any risks. Everyone else is fit and training – Milos Veljkovic, Ömer Toprak, Ludwig Augustinsson and Maxi Eggestein aren’t taking part in all aspects of training today as they played 90 minutes at the weekend.”

…the Bayern game: “I think we performed really well in Munich – with and without the ball. I can’t remember us ever being in Munich and creating so many chances. It was a complete team performance – everyone ran for each other, supported each other in tackles and there was a nasty streak too. I was so pleased with each individual’s performance.”

…Ömer Toprak: “Ömer had a brilliant game and gave us lots of stability. We’re so glad that he’s back fit. He’s an unbelievably important player for us, both on and off the pitch. I hope that he can keep putting in those sorts of performances and show his importance to us in the next few weeks.”

…Maximilian Eggestein: “All you can say is that we put in a brilliant team performance and Maxi was a really important part of that. In the last few weeks, we’ve said again and again how important he is to the side – above all because of his calmness and his tactical knowhow. You can see more and more the role he has on the pitch, talking and directing others. The goal will also give him an extra push.”

…the next few weeks: “We have no reason to sit back and relax. The team reflects on things and knows that, yes, we’re happy with the point, but we feel like we could’ve taken more, so we’re not entirely satisfied. That’s a very positive attitude looking to the next few games.”

…the Wolfsburg game: “We’re up against a Wolfsburg side on Friday that’s unbeaten this season and has great quality throughout their ranks. But I think that we’re prepared and no one is thinking about settling for any less than the maximum.”
